Abortion Laws: Restrictions + Protections
Despite Roe v Wade being overturned by the Supreme Court, access to abortion will remain protected in Washington state.
Legal Restrictions of Abortion | Legal Protections of Abortion |
---|---|
Abortion may be performed at or after viability only if the patient’s life or health is endangered | Parental notification or consent is NOT required |
Insurance that covers maternity services must also cover abortion care- both medicaid and private insurance plans | |
Washington does NOT require biased pre-abortion counseling or mandatory waiting periods | |
The WA state legislature passed HB 1469 and SB 5489 in Feb 2023, which protect patients who travel to WA for abortion (and gender affirming care!) from subpoenas, criminal investigations and arrests from their home states. The same shield law protects healthcare providers from harassment for providing abortion and gender affirming care. |
